Yes, I am indeed referring to Hong Kong. The post-modernistic city's architectural elements, created by the city's challenges and unique conditions, have offered cyberpunk authors a rich visual and thematic palette to work with. This influence has helped form the cyberpunk genre's iconic and recognisable visuals.
Let's dive deeper into how exactly How Kong is a real-life inspiration for Cyberpunk itself, a genre that portrays dystopian societal and architectural conditions:
Street Culture & Subversion:
Similar to the rebellious and anti-authoritarian themes frequently seen in cyberpunk, Hong Kong's dynamic street culture, rallies, and campaigns for political freedom- all of which allow numerous artists to draw inspiration while portraying the genre.
High Tech, Low-life:
In cyberpunk fiction, superior technology frequently coexists with inequity and societal deterioration. With its modern infrastructure contrasted with congested living conditions and economic inequality, Hong Kong exemplifies this dichotomy.
Blurring Cultural Differences:
The history of Hong Kong as a British colony and its subsequent transition to Chinese control resulted in a city with a mixed culture. In a similar vein, dystopian metropolitan settings are frequently explored in cyberpunk literature.
Rooftop Culture:
Cyberpunk settings have integrated Hong Kong's rooftop culture, where residents use roofs for living, socialising, and trade, as a representation of the lack of space and the ingenuity needed for urban life. This is just one of the many challenges the population is trying to improvise upon, by using functional architectural techniques. Hong Kong is known to prioritize function over form. Hence, you may come across innumerable buildings that look identical, all made to serve similar functions to the vast population.
The Harbour Influence:
Hong Kong's waterfront position and harbour have impacted cyberpunk scenes that take place near water bodies or involve ports, shipping yards, and aquatic features- alongside showcasing intense scenes and instances of the character overlooking the melancholic skyline (All my cyberpunk architecture dreams were fulfilled when I watched the light show at the Harbour via the ferry, I was in awe as an architecture student).
Visiting Hong Kong is what motivated me to start my own architectural blog. Hence, I spent about two weeks rummaging through my personal clicks of the architecture intricately spread across the region, in addition to conducting research studies and understanding the underlying seriousness and themes of the Cyberpunk genre as a whole. I hope to honour the juxtaposition of advancing technology with the social and political challenges without making this post difficult to understand.
Here's to the Cyberpunk Capital!
